Why Sweden?

Sweden is perfection.  Beauty, happiness, wealth, health… and equality.

How many do I get out of 5?  Well we will be there to find out for ourselves! Scandanavia is often quoted when talking about the highest rates of happiness and trust; the lowest crime; and excellent healthcare and education.  Then again Swedes have been stereotyped as being “startlingly aware of their own demise”.  Has there been an impact on the society’s mental health?  What other impacts have high rates of tax and overpaid unskilled jobs had on the people’s motivation to work harder?

There will be good and bad to take away from Sweden, but it is hard to deny that the country has one of the highest average standards of living anywhere.

From a legal background, I (Hacon) will be very interested to see how the system of enforcement required to uphold such an equal system is so effective and how it is kept in check.

From an environmental background, Steve will be interested in why Sweden has such a natural commitment to sustainability and recycling.

But overall we will be both looking at the social, economic and human effects.  See the “about page” for more about our inspiration for the trip.
